She's Gone (1976) - Hall & Oates

Blue-eyed Soul: Everybody's high on consolation Everybody's trying to tell me what is right for me...

 Hip to Be Square

“She’s Gone”, Daryl Hall and John Oates, (1973; 1976)

The over-produced shiny pop hits in their later career make us forget where Hall and Oates came from – they were street corner doo-wop singers from Philadelphia who were too late for doo-wop but not rock and roll enough for new wave. They branded their own kind of music: Rock and Soul.

sugarloaf - don't call us, we'll call you

To say the least the cat was cold He said, don't call us child we'll call you

Pick of the Week

“Don’t Call Us We’ll Call You”, Sugarloaf, 1975

I remember listening to this song when Dad was driving me between swimming lessons and going to my Aunt and Uncles for dinner. I always changed the radio station in the car no matter who was driving. My parents didn't seem to mind  - most of the time! I always think of the smell of chlorine unfortunately when I hear this very cool song.

So the story goes, Jerry Corbetta didn’t have a record deal for his band ‘Sugarloaf’. He called up this A&R1 man at Columbia Records wanting to figure out how to make something work. The guy was rude and hung up. So Jerry found someone else to record “Don’t Call Us”, and when it started climbing up the charts the A&R guy was calling Jerry – so he hung up...

Sarah McLachlan and Josh Groban - In The Arms Of The Angel

You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie you're in the arms of an angel; may you find some comfort here

Sappy Song Department

“In the Arms of the Angel” Sarah McLachlan and Josh Grobin, Live Aid , 2005

Multi-Grammy and “Order of Canada” holder Sarah McLachlan released her first album “Touch” in 1988. It went  gold and she has not looked back, selling over forty million records since then. She has contributed to music education, animal rights and other charities around the world.  She founded the amazingly successful 'Lilith Fair' in 1997, a showcase of woman in music that was a charity to help women in need.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)

Hey, hey, my, my, rock and roll can never die...

Pick of the Week

"Hey, Hey, My, My”, Neil Young (1979)

The Godfather of grunge?  The Grandfather of grunge?
This seems like an insult to the immensity that is Neil Young.

Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) is older than I am. I have never had any thoughts of raising a kind of moral anarchy, anti-monarchy or outraging the public for the sake of doing it. I don’t think a lot of people have. They get annoyed from time to time but not like Johnny, and the rest of the punks. It is the vicarious experience from punk that most of us like or can relate to in some way.  Some not so much.
